A bento is a Japanese lunch box. In Japan, kids and adults who take their lunches to work and school bring their rice, fish or meat, pickles, and so on in a reusable, small , rectangle or oval, plastic container or lunch box. Many bento boxes have very cute designs on the lid, and are wrapped in furoshiki, or a square fabric. Almost all bento boxes are lovingly packed, cooked, and arranged by Japanese mothers. The bento box contents show the care, consideration, and time the mother puts into to her loved ones meal. There was a formula to the bento box, a certain amount of rice, protein, pickle, and sometimes fruit.

Bento, or obento to use the honorific term, is a meal served in a box. Beyond that basic definition though, just about anything goes as to what kind of box or container is used, as well as what is put inside that box
So, basically in Japan it is how they make their lunches. They take a small box and fill it with rice and veggies and make it look all cute. (you can get different size boxes and all sorts of cute designs so there is something for everyone!)
Mine are very American but I am still doing the how to make it look cute all in this tiny box. It is also a great way to have portion control :)
If you go to Google images or flickr and type in bento you will see some AWESOME pictures of bentos that people have made. Seriously people are very creative that's why I wanted to try it. I just can't get too wild or P will not eat it!!!
Here are a couple of cute ones that I found....maybe mine will be this fancy one day!
