Big ideas in a small room

So, I've got big plans for my living room. When we moved to our house ummmm 9 years ago I was promised by my loving hubby that we would get new carpet in the living room. Well 9 years, many messy cats and a kid that spills just about everything she eats my carpet and my couch need replaced. The carpet needed replaced 9 years ago so you can only imagine so here are some of my thoughts:

• Our living room is long and thin. With our current couch you have to put it against the wall if you angle it out it pretty much goes from wall to wall and looks silly.
• The heat in our house isn't all that great so I would like to try and keep from covering the registers with anything where the air/heat can't circulate
• Our floors - hmmm can't decide on new carpet or wood laminate
• The front door - Gonna have to paint it but not sure what color. I think we are going to paint the walls a rusty reddish orange color so what should we do about our blue front door. We have it opened a lot so it would show in the living room and of course on the front porch.
• The only piece of furniture I really like in here is the halltree thing we have and it is black.
• I want a new desk for my computer and a new tv
• Also want to get a new couch and lamps and well pretty much everything in here
• Another problem we have is one of our kitties likes to scratch the corner of the couch
  

Well I'm sure there is more but that was some of my thoughts tonight. So, where do you like to shop for furniture and home decor stuff? I like Target, TJ Maxx, homedecorators.com and garage sale/thrifts but could use more ideas!

Oh and of course I want to remake this room into something fab with as little work as possible and on the cheap! Very tall orders huh? hahaa
