The Big Six

Last week was my daughters birthday. She turned 6. Now for the last 5 birthdays I've thrown a pretty big shindig inviting lots of friends and family to our house. This year....I didn't...and I am still feeling regret about it :( Did she have a nice birthday? I would say so! If you asked her ON her birthday she would say it was the worst birthday ever. Let me try and explain....

One of the many reasons we didn't do a big party was because it is so hot in July ...last year we had it in our barn and it worked out pretty good but this year the bottom of the barn is FULL of junk because my husband is remodeling my "Ebay" room so EVERYTHING that was up there is down stairs and there is a lot of stuff...I should go take a picture because most people wouldn't believe! I mean some of it is ebay stuff, some is holiday stuff some is just junk and all of it needs to be gone through and sorted! Anyway so the barn was off limits this year which means we would have to have it in the house.

Well that isn't a huge deal except this year we are having a losing battle with fleas. We have 5 kitties and we just can't get the fleas outta here...we tried all sorts of things so if you have any suggestions let me know! Anyway so we would have to have the kitties downstairs so they didn't get in the food or anything and I know a bunch of kids aren't going to stay upstairs when the basement is full of toys so .....the house is out!

Then P decides she wants to have it at the Gymnastics place in town ummm that might be okay but most of our family has to travel at least an hour and the party is just for two hours and I wouldn't be able to invite everyone because they only allow so many people! So....I decide that this year we will just have cake and ice cream at grandmas house and just have grandmas/grandpas and great grandmas.

So our weekend started on Friday....we went with my mom and some friends to Conner Prairie and to see a movie for P's birthday. Then Saturday we were to have grandparents over for cake only one side didn't come but that is a whole other story :/ Of course I still tried to make it special for P with a cute cake and a little banner and such and all was well ....errrr ....so I thought
Sunday morning - P's actual birthday she came running in the living room when she woke up and was really sad there were no presents or balloons or basically anything and she cried. Now since it was her birthday we did have a few things planned - we went to the "big" city and went out to lunch (which she didn't like!), she got to jump on one of those big trampolines at the malland we went to Build a Bear and let her buy more than she should have. The whole ride home she complained about it being the worst birthday ever (ahhh poor girl if she only knew!) and when asked why she said it was because didn't get the roller skates or the skateboard she asked for.

Oh and the birthday fun didn't end here...we had a playdate set up with a couple of local friends for Monday so we brought our leftover cupcakes and called it a party...poor poor girl!

So ...so much for me trying to save a little money and have a small party. P thought it was the worst one ever and I probably spent 5 times as much trying to do just a few small things instead of one big party.

We better get that barn back in order so next year can be another big shin dig! So those of you who read this and are normally invited to our summer bday party it is not because we don't love ya...honestly!!! it was me trying to scale it back and not spend so much money and well I dunno but I guess that was a big fail! All I did was spend way to much money and feel guilt for not inviting people over who have been celebrating with us for years! Anyway!!!

How about you? Do you throw a big party every year? Do you leave it up to the birthday kid? How do you know who to invite? When do the parties move from family/family friends to schoolmates? Do you try and have both sides of the family together or separate parties? Errr maybe you don't do anything at all??? Just curious! Sorry about my ramble but I guess that is what blogs are for, huh?

Her party was really cute! I usually throw a big party for my oldest son but with my second child he had a small party and I loved that a whole lot more! I never got much as a child though so I try to spoil them as much as I can!
